When Polyaspartic Is the Right Call
Polyaspartic floor coating is a type of aliphatic polyurea, and in Laredo its main strengths are sun resistance and speed. HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as excellent, compared with poor to fair for epoxy, and says it reaches a full cure in about 1 to 2 days instead of up to a week. For a garage that faces the afternoon sun or a patio with no roof, those two traits matter more than almost anything else.
Sun stability
Epoxy is a strong base coat, but most epoxies are not meant to sit in direct sunlight. Over time, UV exposure can turn a clear epoxy amber and make colors look dull. Polyaspartic is aliphatic, so it keeps its color and clarity in sunlight. On many Laredo floors, we use an epoxy base for build and bond, and a polyaspartic topcoat on top. On outdoor slabs, we may use polyaspartic for every layer.
Speed
HomeGuide says polyaspartic is dry to the touch within a few hours and ready for vehicle traffic in about 24 to 48 hours. That helps families who park in the garage every night and businesses that cannot close for a week. Many garage systems can be ground, coated and topcoated in a single day.
Fast curing in hot weather
Speed has a cost: polyaspartic sets quickly, and heat makes it set faster. On a hot Laredo afternoon, a batch can start to thicken in minutes. That is why we mix small batches, keep material shaded, and start summer jobs in the early morning. A well-run crew works the floor in sections with no rush and no lap lines. This is also why we do not recommend polyaspartic as a do-it-yourself product, and HomeGuide lists it as not DIY-friendly.
Flexibility and moisture
HomeGuide describes polyaspartic as highly flexible compared with epoxy, which it calls more brittle, and says polyaspartic tolerates higher concrete moisture than epoxy. That flexibility helps on outdoor slabs that heat in the sun and cool at night. Moisture tolerance has limits, so we still test the slab before every job.
Where we use it
- Garages with west- or south-facing doors that stay open
- Patios, porches and pool deck areas
- Garages where you need to park again within a day or two
- Commercial spaces that must reopen quickly
- Topcoats over epoxy flake and color floors
Thickness and prep
Polyaspartic goes on thinner per coat than epoxy: HomeGuide lists 2 to 6 mils per coat for polyaspartic and 10 to 20 mils for epoxy. A thin, fast coating shows every flaw in the slab underneath, so grinding and crack repair matter even more. We grind the full floor and fill cracks before the first coat.

Polyaspartic can be used for a full system or as the top layer over epoxy.

How It Works
1. Test and plan
We test moisture, check the slab and decide on a full polyaspartic or hybrid system.
2. Grind and fill
The whole slab is ground and vacuumed, and cracks are repaired.
3. Coat in small batches
Material is mixed in small amounts and applied in sections, timed to the temperature.
4. Return to use
Foot traffic in hours and vehicles in about a day or two, with exact times for your floor.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Each does a different job. Polyaspartic resists UV and cures fast; epoxy builds thickness and bonds well as a base. Many Laredo floors use both: epoxy underneath and polyaspartic on top.
How much more does polyaspartic cost than epoxy?
HomeGuide lists polyaspartic at $5 to $12 per square foot and epoxy at $4 to $10. For a two-car garage, that is about $2,000 to $6,900 compared with $1,600 to $5,800.
How soon can I drive on a polyaspartic floor?
HomeGuide says about 24 to 48 hours for vehicles. The exact time depends on the product and the temperature, and we give you a time for your floor.
Can polyaspartic be used outdoors in Laredo?
Yes. It is one of the few floor coatings suited to full sun because it is UV stable. Outdoors we add texture so it is not slick when wet.
